Vultures soon may become extinct in India

Mumbai: Vulture may soon become extinct if its population continues to decline at an alarming rate in India, despite the government taking various measures, according to the Bombay Natural History Society.

The BNHS states that the population of this bird has declined at the rate of around 50 per cent every year. “Now there are only 11,000 vultures in India. If their population continues to decline at this rate, then only around 6000 vultures will be left and finally they may become extinct,” Arshad Rehmani, Director of BNHS told PTI.

He said this decline is happening despite government banning the veterinary drug Diclofenac, which are given as a treatment to cattle. — PTI
