Corrections and clarifications

* A report “New Navy Vice-Chief” (May 1, 2008) said that “Vice-Admiral Raman Prem Suthan on Wednesday took over as Vice-Chief of the Naval Staff here. He replaces Vice-Admiral Nirmal Verma, who has been appointed Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. Vice-Admiral Suthan had earlier served … He [Vice-Admiral Suthan] is slated to take over as the next Chief of the Naval Staff.”

It was an (editing) error. The first paragraph in the original report said “Vice Admiral Raman Prem Suthan on Wednesday took over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff here. He replaces Vice Admiral Nirmal Verma who has been appointed as the Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. Vice Admiral Verma is slated to take over as the next Chief of the Naval Staff.”

* The heading of a report was “Hawk damaged in accident” while the text said “A recently acquired British jet to train rookie pilots was damaged at Bidar airport in Karnataka on Tuesday after the pilot aborted the take off for a training mission ….” The text did not have any detail on the aircraft involved, leading to a query on the heading.

It was an editing error. The text in the original report (and not published) said “This is the first accident involving the Hawk advanced jet trainers (AJT) that are being gradually inducted at the especially upgraded Air Force Station (AFS) Bidar. The IAF has taken charge of 10 Hawk AJTs in a $2 billion deal. It plans to receive 12 more off-the-shelf AJTs from the U.K. and another 44 would be assembled in the country.”

* A report “Verdict reserved on Shraddananda’s appeal” (May 1, 2008) said “The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the appeal of ‘godman’ Swami Shraddananda, sentenced to death by the Karnataka High Court for murdering his wife, Begum Shakereh Namazi, who belonged to the erstwhile royal family of Mysore in Karnataka.” The text also said “The prosecution case was that Shakereh, granddaughter of Sir Mirza Ismail, former Diwan of Mysore ….” It was an error. Sir Mirza Ismail did not belong to any royal family/the erstwhile royal family of Mysore. According to the Legal Correspondent, the prosecution case made the claim of a royal link.

* A sentence in the fourth paragraph of a report “The milk of kindness continues to flow” (Chennai city, May 1, 2008, page 5) said “About 35 litres of milk a day is bought and curdled overnight”, leading to a few queries on the use of the word. The OED says that to curdle is to separate or cause to separate into curd. It does not mean spoilage, and the usage is right.
