Price rise

The UPA government says it has taken a slew of measures for controlling inflation and price rise but one is yet to see the effects on the ground. The government should not forget that price rise adversely affects the middle classes, the lower-income groups and the poor. It should take more effective measures to keep price rise in check.

While the government is pleading helplessness on account of imported inflation and the States’ failure to crack down on hoarders, the Left parties and the opposition are blaming the government’s policies for the price rise.

Inflation has become more of a financial jugglery wherein ad hoc decisions are announced and imposed overnight to bring down the prices of commodities.

A number of factors are responsible for price rise. But one main cause is hoarding by selfish traders. Vested interests receive hidden gains from them and allow them to increase the prices. The government should take strong steps to control price rise. Essential commodities should be supplied through fair price shops. The law should be implemented strictly against black marketeers.

Among the four causes cited by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for the world food crisis was the “apparent improvement” in the diets in India and China. What a disgusting and offensive thing to say! As a leader of the country which wastes more than 30 per cent of its food and diverts a considerable part of its food from the table to gasoline, she should do some soul searching before making such statements.
