Malleswari, Shiny in NADA governing body

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Sports Ministry on Wednesday named Olympians Shiny Wilson and Karnam Malleswari in the governing body of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Though no announcement has been made about the chairman, it is learnt the Union Sports Minister who had been heading NADA so far would continue to hold that position.

Formed in November, 2005, NADA had never taken off since its composition had not been determined, responsibilities not defined and the structure not finalised in consultation with the Indian Olympic Association.

The anti-doping body is expected to harmonise and implement the rules and regulations relating to anti-doping as per the World Anti Doping Agency Code. India is a signatory to the UNESCO Convention against doping in sports that commits governments to take measures that are “consistent with the principles of the Code.”

The Government, in consultation with the IOA, would be expected to form the National Anti-Doping disciplinary panel and National appeal panel in due course.

The members of the governing body: H.S. Phoolka (senior lawyer), Dr. Manmohan Singh (Chairman, IOA Medical Commission), Shiny Wilson and Karnam Malleswari (sportspersons), Suresh Kalmadi (IOA representative), Randhir Singh, K.P. Singh Deo and G.S. Mander (representatives of National federations). Secretary and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Director-General, Sports Authority of India (SAI) will be ex-officio members.

Executive: Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (Chairman), Joint Secretary, MYAS (Vice Chairman), Financial Advisor, MYAS, Anil Khanna (All India Tennis Association), DG, SAI (ex-officio) and Member-Secretary, NADA (DG, NADA).
