Economic revolution next, say Maoists

Prerana Marasini

Kathmandu: Maoist leaders have reiterated that the country will see an economic revolution in the coming 10 years.

They met senior World Bank officials on Tuesday and discussed their economic plans and the ways in which the Bank can provide financial assistance.

Speaking to the media, Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai said the meeting revolved around the party’s developmental agenda and the Bank’s future financial support.

“Poverty alleviation, economic growth by double digit, creating employment opportunities, transforming agricultural sector are our priorities,” said Dr. Bhattarai. He also said the Bank was ready to help them and the Maoists welcome “donations”. “We are in immediate need of money for compensation of PLA [People’s Liberation Army — Maoists’ army now in cantonments],” he said. “And they’ve said they’ll provide us with the funds.”

After the major victory in the Constituent elections, Maoist leaders Prachanda and Dr. Bhattarai have been saying the country will see miraculous economic revolution.

Hydro power

Meanwhile, the Bank officials also met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and assured him of aid for hydropower development.

The World Bank is among the major donors of Nepal in developmental works.

Donations

The Himalayan region largely depends on donations from Japan, Canada, America and China.
