More veterinary doctors for villages

CHENNAI: The government is adding 40 per cent more to its professional workforce for providing timely help to livestock owners in their villages, Animal Husbandry Minister P. Geethajeevan informed the Assembly on Wednesday.
Replying to a debate on the demands for grants for her department, she said as per the new system, a total of 1651 veterinary doctors would be available in villages. Sub-centres had been upgraded.
The proportion of such doctors serving in rural areas would further increase when the government appointed more of them, based on the needs. Of the 888 Grade-1 sub-veterinary centres, 444 would be upgraded and post-graduate veterinary specialists appointed, she said. The government had opened 40 new veterinary dispensaries in 2007-08.
New farm policy
It was evolving a new farm policy for maintaining livestock and breeds, she said.
The contribution of the livestock sector to the Gross State Domestic Product was 2.62 per cent. The gross value of output was Rs.9654.33 crore.
