CHENNAI: Stakeholders in the tourism industry gave inputs for preparing a draft policy on eco-tourism projects at a regional workshop on eco-tourism governance on Wednesday. The workshop was organised by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), the Inter-State Council Secretariat of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and Yes Bank. Inaugurating the workshop, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy wanted the stakeholders of eco-tourism ventures to engage themselves in “responsible tourism” initiatives. The Government would play the role of a facilitator. The Government had embarked on a Rs.25-crore Marina Beach beautification programme through the Corporation of Madras. The Tourism Department was focussing on rural tourism and promoting heritage and Chettinad tourism. Tourism and Culture Department Secretary V. Irai Anbu said the workshop was crucial to the State, since tourism was booming and there was an imperative need for the Government to improve the tourism-related infrastructure without affecting the environment. Tushar Pandey, Country Head, Strategic Initiatives and Advisory Government, Yes Bank, said that as part of the exercise of drafting a national framework for eco-tourism ventures, regional workshops were being held in different States. M. Rajaram, Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director, TTDC, said that a campaign, with a view to promoting eco-friendly practices and tourist-friendly culture, was launched through the “Virunthinar Potruthum” initiative. Eco-tourism accounted for 28 per cent of tourist arrival in the State, he said..
