Mohd. Sporting qualifies

KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting, Kolkata earned a place in the elite stage of the I-League football as it held Chirag United, Kolkata 1-1 in a fourth round (final-phase) match of the tournament’s Division II in Guwahati on Wednesday.

With the draw Mohammedan Sporting tallied seven points (from four matches) and booked a place among the top four teams, which will qualify to the main stage of the I-League (2008-2009). After a barren first session, Theodore Sundey Wrobeh took Chirag United ahead in the 46th minute. Sporting equalised through Mike Okoro 11 minutes later.

Sporting, which earned a penalty near the end of the match, could not warp up with a win as an Adebayo Tokonbo spot kick was saved by Chirag United goalkeeper Somnath Khara. — Principal Correspondent
