Keen observers: Students of DAV Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, looking at information panels on the mobile exhibition on Tuesday. Chennai: A bright blue bus, carrying information panels and exhibits on disaster management, started its journey across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam flagged off the bus at D.A.V. Gopalapuram Boys Senior Secondary School. The mobile exhibition has been designed and developed by the Centre of Environment Education (CEE), a national institute of excellence supported by the Environment Ministry. The bus exhibition project was executed in association with Intermon Oxfam, an international non-governmental organisation. R. Shailaja, regional director of CEE (South) said the bus would visit villages and schools across Tamil Nadu. Priority would be given to community awareness in rural areas of the State. The exterior of the bus is fitted with information panels that open out, enabling viewers to study the exhibits without having to step inside the bus. One panel explains how tsunami detection buoys afloat on oceans can send out early warnings. Another panel shows a model of a seismograph that is used to measure the intensity of earthquakes. The most useful information is an advisory on what to pack in an emergency kit. Property documents, identification papers, basic clothing, dry food and first aid materials are recommended components of the kit. Locally-available materials such as casuarina poles can be used to make stretchers to carry the injured and floats can be made out of plastic bottles tied together in case of floods, one of the panels said. The bus also carries an LCD projector. An animated film on how natural disasters such as a tsunami, cyclone or flood occur will be played at all the stops made by the bus.
