Site identified at Top Sengattupatti

Accommodation facility for trainees also planned

TIRUCHI: Tiruchi is one among the districts vying for a high altitude sports training centre planned in the State with Central support.

According to official sources, the district administration has sent a proposal to Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) for the setting up of the facility at Top Sengattupatti in Thuraiyur taluk near here.

The district administration has identified a site for the centre at Top Sengattupatti, which is located at an altitude of 3,100 feet.

Though the suggested altitude requirement was 5,000 feet, the district administration was hopeful that the centre could be sanctioned considering the backwardness of the region.

Besides, officials hoped that SDAT would consider the proposal as the facility would be of immense help to budding sportspersons in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts.

The proposed training centre in 10 acres aims at stretching the physical limits of the sportspersons thereby enabling them to shine at national and international levels. The centre would train the youngsters in various sports disciplines. Accommodation facility for the trainees have also been planned.

Long-distance runners are those who would benefit the maximum as training at such a facility would improve their endurance levels.

Ethiopian athletes who have excelled in long distance running have reportedly attributed their international success to high altitude training. Also the centre would provide a chance for sportspersons to practice at a place where pollutions levels are low.
