CHENNAI: Tuticorin Port ensured there was at least one District team in the semifinal league phase after its 5-2 win via the tie-breaker over Tamil Nadu Special Police in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday in the Champion Club football tournament. The two teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In another quarterfinal, Arrows FC edged Nethaji SC 4-3 via the tie-breaker after being 1-1 at the end of regular time. In the first session itself, after TSP’s goalkeeper Kishore Kumar fouled on Nevin, Tuticorin earned a penalty kick but Bruston missed. Then early in the second session, Bruston provided a pass for Ramesh to effect the kill but the latter failed. Tuticorin forged ahead in the 84th minute off Bruston’s left footer but TSP found the equaliser in the injury time (94th) through L. Kanagaraj. In the tie-breaker, Bruston, Nevin, Pravin and Dinesh found the mark for the winner while only Senthil converted for TSP. In the other match, Arrows took an early lead through Murugan. However, Nethaji drew level through Naresh off a flag kick late in the second session. In the tie breaker, Raj Mohan, Ezekiel and Rajan scored for Arrows. Only Durai Raj and Yuvaraj converted for the loser. — Special Correspondent
