Petition on school withdrawn

Special Correspondent

Plea sought to quash AEE letter

The AIWC School in the Government estate was told to quit possession

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed as withdrawn a writ petition seeking to quash the letter of the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Government House Sub-Division, Government Estate here, directing the AIWC School in the estate to quit possession.

A Division Bench comprising Justices S. J. Mukhopadhaya and F. M. Ibrahim Kalifulla said that in view of the stand taken by the State’s counsel that alternative site had been allotted for running the higher secondary school, the petitioner’s counsel sought permission to withdraw the petition without any liberty to file another writ petition.

Hence, it dismissed the petition as withdrawn.

In his petition, Joel of Aminjikarai and A.V.Shanmugam of Chepauk had said the AEE had sent the notice to the institution, stating that the property was required for construction of a government complex.

They said that the act of calling upon an educational institution, which catered for the poor, downtrodden and orphans, to quit overnight was a cruel act. The letter was illegal.
