“RTI Act: major role for media”

CHENNAI: The chief architect of United States’ Freedom of Information Act, Thomas M. Susman, said that the media had a major role to play in the bringing about of the Act in his country.
Sharing his experiences with the Act here recently at a discussion organised by the U.S. Consulate-General, Chennai and Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group, he said patience was needed as these things didn’t happen overnight.
He said that the Act did not apply to the judicial administration. Businesses and law firms were the largest groups that made requests under the Act. NGOs, media, historians and individuals followed suit.
State Chief Information Commissioner S. Ramakrishnan said that the RTI Act does not solve all problems and eliminate corruption. “It brings transparency. And in a transparent area, it is impossible to sustain corruption for long periods.”
