KARUR: A total of 100 habitats in Thanthoni Panchayat Union of Karur district would get potable water from the Cauvery through the new Combined Water Supply Scheme that has been completed at a cost of Rs. 6.29 crore. The scheme is to be commissioned by next month. Speaking after inspecting the construction of a ground level tank at Emur Pudur as part of the scheme, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that a collector well would be sunk at Kattalai on the Cauvery river bed from where water would be pumped and conveyed through pipes to feed ground level sumps at Emur Pudur, Kodangipatti, Kandasarapatti, Chinnakulathupatti, Thuraiyur, Oothukaraipatti, Puthambur, Chettipalayam and Indra Colony. Overhead tanks have been constructed at 96 habitats while four habitats _ Nayakkanur, Rakkiyakoundanpudur, Avinthipalayam and Solaiyappa Goundanpudur _ have got new overhead tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres. Households would be supplied potable Cauvery water through the scheme, Mr. Venkatesh said. Over 30,000 people residing in Appipalayam, Kakkavadi, Karuppampalayam, K. Pitchampatti, Mookkanankurichi, Paganatham, Puthambur, Thalapatti and Melapalayam would benefit through the scheme, the Collector said. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials have been instructed to expedite the scheme to enable commissioning by next month, he added. TWAD Board Executive Engineer K. Akilan and other officials were present.
