Second seed Prerana upset

Principal Correspondent

ANGAMALY: Shalini Sahoo admits that she cannot afford playing outside the country. The Delhi girl, however, makes the most of tournaments within India.

On Tuesday, the unseeded Lady Sri Ram College student upset the second-seeded Prerana-Mythri Appineni 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to reach the pre-quarterfinals of the ITF Federal Bank international women’s tennis tournament at the FISAT courts, Mookkannur, near here.

Shalini, who is ranked nearly 350 spots behind Prerana at No. 1062 in the ITF list, played very cautiously.

“I wanted to get a feel of things, so I just tried to keep the ball in,” she said. “And I knew Mythri likes to hit fast and hard, so I didn’t try any fancy stuff, I just pushed, only hit angles,” said the 18-year-old who finished runner-up at the recent grass court National in Delhi. “It worked,” she added.

A little later, Georgia’s 17-year-old Magda Okruashvili, a qualifier, packed off the fourth-seeded Sonal Phadke 6-3, 6-1.

Sonal appeared weary midway through the match and bowed out without much fight.

The results (first round): Singles: Parul Goswami bt Shahin Ansari 6-4, 6-3; Miki Miyamura (Jpn) bt Kesiki Jayapalan 6-0, 6-1; Yu Min-Hwa (Kor) bt Poojashree Venkatesha 6-1, 6-3; Shweta Kumari Solanki bt Visakha Sheoran 6-1, 6-3; Shalini Sahoo bt Prerana-Mythri Appineni 6-4, 2-6, 6-3; Archana Venkataraman bt Nisha Nair 6-1, 6-0; Goele Lemmens (Bel) bt Rajur Chirashanthi 6-0, 6-2; Geeta Manohar bt Deepna Vazirani 6-0, 6-0; Ashmitha Easwaramurthi bt Yuvi Kurushima (Jpn) 6-2, 6-1; Julia Matojan (Est) bt Aishwarya Agrawal 6-4, 6-2; Trang Huynh Phuong Dai (Vie) bt Shweta Kakhandki Gadigeppa 6-1, 6-2; Magda Okruashvili (Geo) bt 4-Sonal Phadke 6-3, 6-1.
