HAVANA: Cuba’s ruling Communist Party will hold its sixth national congress in late 2009, President Raul Castro announced on Monday. “We want to propose ... that a Congress be held during the second half of next year,” state TV quoted Mr. Castro as saying at a meeting of the Cuban Communist Party’s Central Committee. The congress will offer a platform to summarise experiences since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1958, highlighting the ruling party’s efforts during the Special Period in the 1990s, Mr. Castro added. The Special Period is a term used to denote the economic crisis Cuba suffered in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mr. Castro said one of the main tasks facing the ruling Communist Party was improving social justice under the “complicated and changing situation,” as well as ensuring the country’s security by enhancing its capacity for food production. — Xinhua
