Maiden effort: Collector S.J. Chiru digging a canal at Dombuserry village in Bodi taluk on Tuesday to mark the launch of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme. THENI: Agriculture labourers in the district will certainly get job for at least 100 days in a year, thanks to the launching of National Employment Guarantee Programme. Response from people is very encouraging. A total of 19,600 families have registered their names in various panchayats and identity cards given to 14,605 families. In the first phase, work has commenced in 38 panchayats, said Collector S.J. Chiru, after launching the programme at Dombuserry village in Bodi Taluk here on Tuesday. The work would commence at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Salary would be disbursed to the workers every Monday. Sunday would be a holiday. Registers would be maintained for all the jobs to calculate their work and attendance. Mr. Chiru appealed to agriculture labourers to register themselves under this scheme and avail the Central Government scheme. Eight persons have been deputed to lay a link road connecting Bodi-Silamalai Road with Sillamarathupatti panchayat at a cost of Rs.3.10 lakh. A total of 250 persons from this panchayat have come to the work spot. Already, thirty per cent of families have registered their names to do various works taken up under this scheme in the panchayat. Later, the Collector inspected desilting of tank at Pottipuram village in Chinnamanur union at a cost of Rs.3 lakh. Thirty five people have joined in this work. The NREGP, a Central Government-sponsored programme, has been launched in various districts in the State in order to provide jobs for 100 days to agriculture labourers.
