Abandoned baby finds refuge

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: A two-month-old baby, who was abandoned by her parents at a private hospital, was handed over to the Children’s Home for Boys and Girls on Hosur Road on Saturday.

She was brought by her parents to the M.S. Ramaiah Hospital on April 16, to be treated for pneumonia. After admitting the baby, they left the hospital and never returned. The hospital records gave the baby’s details as Smitha, D/o Manjunath, Jangamakote, Shidagatta, Chikkaballapur district. The hospital contacted the Sanjaynagar police who confirmed that the address was false.

Helpline

The police advised the hospital to contact the Child Helpline after the baby’s health improved. The helpline handed over the infant to the children’s home which comes under the Child Welfare Committee. Speaking to The Hindu, Child Helpline Coordinator Shobana Kulothungan said that the baby would remain in the home for six months after which she would be offered for adoption if no one comes to claim her. “Poverty would have forced the parents to abandon the child or it may be a case of a gender bias,” she added.
