143 candidates in fray in Chickballapur, Kolar

KOLAR: After deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers expired on Saturday for the first phase of polls, 143 candidates remained in the fray in Kolar and Chickballapur districts.

The total number of candidates in Kolar district was 91, and in Chickballapur district it was 52. Besides official candidates of various political parties, several rebels and independent candidates will test their electoral future in six constituencies in Kolar district and five Assembly segments in Chickballapur district on May 10.

All arrangements were being made for free and fair polls in the district, Deputy Commissioner of Kolar and District Election Officer G. Ramachandra told presspersons on Saturday. Sectoral officers have been appointed for the first time for smooth conduct of polls, and for confidence building among voters in vulnerable areas, Mr. Ramachandra said. Additional Superintendent of Police K. Yallappa was present.
