Nine more file papers in Chikmagalur

CHIKMAGALUR: Nine persons filed their nomination papers for the elections to the legislative Assembly, in Chikmagalur district on Friday.

D.N. Jeevaraj, former chief whip in the legislative Assembly, filed his papers as a BJP candidate for Sringeri seat. K.B. Mallikarjuna, former chief whip in the legislative Council, filed his papers as a Congress candidate for Chikmagalur seat.

The BJP is the first to have completed the formalities of fielding candidates in the five Assembly segments of the district. They are C.T. Ravi (Chikmagalur), M.P. Kumaraswamy (Mudigere), Y.C. Viswanath (Kadur), D.S. Suresh (Tarikere) and D.N. Jeevaraj (Sringeri).

Congress candidates have filed their papers for Chikmagalur and Kadur seats. The party has announced that A.C. Chandrappa will be its candidate for Mudigere. Supporters of the former Minister D.B. Chandre Gowda staged protests in Koppa urging the party leadership to nominate him as a candidate for Sringeri seat.

The Janata Dal (S) has fielded one candidate. S.L. Bhoje Gowda, working president of the district unit of the party, has filed his papers for Chikmagalur seat. While Y.S.V. Datta, MLC, and H.T. Rajendra are certain to contest from Kadur and Sringeri segments, the former Minister B.B. Ningaiah had to overcome a stiff challenge from Ashok Lad before obtaining approval of the party leadership. The Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded its candidates in Sringeri, Kadur and Tarikere. C.E. Basavaraj has filed his nomination papers as a candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) for Mudigere seat. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced that it will contest for Chikmagalur and Mudigere seats.
