N. Basavaraju Chitradurga: “Old age is a state of mind.” This phrase rightly applies to 72-year-old N. Basavaraju. While people of his age prefer to stay at home or spend their time reading, Mr. Basavaraju loves to trek in the wilderness of the Western Ghats or climb the Himalayan mountains to explore nature. A retired professor of commerce, Mr. Basavaraju has participated in several Himalayan expedition camps, and is all set to attend his 11th trekking camp from April 28. Young at heart, he developed an admiration for nature and a passion for adventure two decades ago, when one of his friends took him along to Kudremukh to trek. “Till I was 50, I never went trekking. Nor did I go out jogging. But, when I first went to Kudremukh, I was so mesmerised by the experience, and I began participating in such camps regularly,” he said. His passion for exploring nature took him to various places right from the coastal areas of Goa to the deserts in Rajasthan. But, the first opportunity to scale the Himalayan mountains came in 1990 when he accompanied a group to the Chandrakali range in Himachal Pradesh. He said that during his expeditions, he had covered several challenging places in the Himalayas.
