NLC Youth Club beats Bright Star FC

CHENNAI: NLC Youth Club (Cuddalore) managed a 2-1 win over Bright Star FC (Tirunelveli), while Christian Sports Fellowship (Kancheepuram) swamped National FC Salem 9-1 in two preliminary round matches on Friday in the Champion Club football tournament here.

Suresh Kumar put NLC up in the third minute after a left-flank move. Bright Star had to wait till the 80th minute of the second session for the equaliser.

The hard-working Reji Bank brought joy for the Tirunelveli side after Manu, Moses and J. Binu had done all the spade work.

However, NLC bounced back quickly to seize the initiative in the 87th minute through G. Arumugam and that effort proved to be the match-winner.

Earlier, led by Raja Prasad, who scored four goals, Christian Sports Fellowship made it a one-sided affair.

Prasad’s goals came in the fourth, 19th, 33rd and 39th minutes. Karthik (30, 46, 52), John Balu (37) and Dinesh (80) were the other scorers.

For the loser, P. Thilai Rajan provided the only success in the 12th minute.

IOB, IB in last four

Two local rivals, IOB and Indian Bank, will fight it out in one of the men’s semifinals of the Panimalar-John memorial volleyball tournament being held here.

In the other semifinal, Southern Railway will face BPCL.

While IOB made short work of BPCL 25-17, 25-19, 25-13, Indian Bank had a struggle on hand against Cochin Port Trust. The Chennai team dropped the first two games before regaining its touch to prevail 14-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13.

Kalaivanan, Sathish and Sai Krishnan led the Indian Bank attack efficiently to ensure the win.

KSEB beats CR

In the women’s section, KSEB defeated Central Railway 21-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-17.

In another match, Western Railway beat Dr. Sivanthi Club 25-14, 24-26, 25-18, 25-21. Both KSEB and Western Railway are the unbeaten sides in the women’s section and their encounter on Saturday will decide the title in this round-robin league.

Krishna Khaitan badminton postponed

The annual Krishna Khaitan junior badminton tournament, which attracts entries from all over the country, has been postponed this year to sometime in the third week of October. Usually it is held in June.

The postponement became necessary as the roof of the SDAT administered Nehru Indoor stadium is undergoing repairs, according to Sanjiv Sachdev, Tournament Secretary.

He said for an event of this nature which attracted around 1,500 entries it was necessary to have a minimum of eight courts. Only Nehru indoor hall had this capacity, he said.

Mr. Sachdev said the premier event would be held in October but the dates would be finalised in due course.

Bharath dazzles

Prathan Bharath’s big hitting (57 n.o., 24b, 12x4) was the highlight of IE-IPL CA’s eight-wicket win over Kedar ‘B’ in a match in the Kedar’s Pearls U-11 cricket tournament.

The scores: BSCA 103 for seven in 25 overs lost to Kedar CA ‘A’ 104 for four in 14.4 overs.

Kedar ‘B’ 79 for seven in 25 overs lost to IE-IPL CA 82 for two in 8.2 overs (Prathan Bharath 57 n.o.).

Basketball camps

The Professional Basketball Academy in association with the Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu (SDAT) will organise two summer camps for boys and girls at the synthetic courts, SDAT Sports Complex, Block 8, Mogappair west, (behind the Mogappair bus terminus) from May 1 to 15 and May 16 to 31.

Mathew Satyababu, who captained the Indian team at the Bangkok Asian Games will be the chief coach of the camp.

The Hindustan College of Engineering and COSCO have extended support for the camps. Aside from Mathew Sathyababu the PBA four other former India captains namely Jayasankar Menon, Prasanna Jayasankar, Sunny and Jeen Zachria. Chess camp

Inter-corporate event
