‘High-rises to dominate construction practices’

HYDERABAD: Construction practices in the coming days are going to be dominated more and more by super tall towers, David Scott, Chairman, International Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) observed here on Friday.

Delivering the keynote lecture on ‘Recent Development in the Design of Tall Buildings’ at the National Workshop on High Rise Buildings organised by JNTU College of Engineering here, Mr. Scott said the concept of towers had shifted from the US to Asia in last decades. The demand for this was fuelled by migration from the rural side to the cities and most of them would be living in the high-rises.

An advocate for sustainable cities and sustainable towers, the CTBUH was working with a mission to distribute knowledge and encourage debate about best practices in tall building design and construction.

Draft paper

The council had come out with a draft document of recommendations for seismic design of high-rise buildings which was written over past 18 months. The draft was now put for public comments, he said. The effort was to critically review international practices, draw attention to inadequacies of some commonly used procedures and to act as a catalyst for change where needed, Mr. Scott remarked. Around 550 delegates from different parts of the country are part of the two-day workshop being held at National Academy of Construction.
