O’Sullivan says sorry after victory

SHEFFIELD: Ronnie O’Sullivan apologised for his controversial remarks at last month’s China Open after beating Chinese debutant Liu Chuang in the first round of snooker’s World championship at the Crucible Theatre here on Thursday.

The Englishman, who faces the prospect of disciplinary action after making a series of lewd comments and sexual innuendos at a news conference following his defeat by Hong Kong’s Marco Fu in Beijing, said he would voluntarily withdraw from future events in China if the organisers felt offended by his participation.

He won three of Thursday’s first four frames to take an 8-5 lead in the best of 19 contest. O’Sullivan, then, won the 14th frame too. He won a close 15th frame 70-59 to seal victory.

In another match, Scotland’s Stephen Maguire beat Anthony Hamilton of England 10-3. — Agencies
