CHENNAI: The Vestas National laser coastal sailing championship got off to a start on Friday with the sponsor’s race which is the practice race that highlights the preparations and race readiness of the host. The race was held in calm water and wind, which was east-south easterly, was of the magnitude of 10 knots. In all fifty boats have registered for the championships and this is the biggest fleet of Lasers to sail in the country. Brig (Retd.) A.P. Singh, the first Indian to get International Sailing Federation recognition will be conducting the races this year. The Jury will be chaired by Arjuna Awardee C.S. Pradipak. Earlier the championship was inaugurated by Chennai Port Trust Chairman, K. Suresh. Also present on the occasion were Ashok Thakkar, Commodore, Tamil Nadu Sailing Association and Christodass Gandhi, Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs among others. The results: Laser Full Rig: 1. B.K. Rout (Army Yachting Node); 2. Jasvir Singh (AYN); 3. D.P. Selvam (AYN); Laser Radial: 1. Gaurav Randhawa, (INWTC); 2. Supri Singh (AYN); 3. Gajendar Singh (AYN); Laser 4.7: 1. Xerxes Bamboat (RBYC); 2. Shwetha Sadanand (TNSA); 3. Varun Thakkar (TNSA). — Special Correspondent
