Stanford eager to sponsor new T20 tournaments

LONDON: American billionaire Allen Stanford wants to bankroll new Twenty20 competitions that he believes will make cricket the most popular sport in the world.

The Texan met with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) this week to outline his proposal for lucrative Twenty20 games against a West Indies team, to be played at his cricket ground in Antigua.

He said he was also ready to invest in an English version of the Indian Premier League, which plays Twenty20 matches, and predicted it could be worth as much as £500 million.

“Twenty20 has the potential to be the most popular team sport in the whole World in maybe less than 10 years,” Stanford said on Thursday.

Efficient execution

“But it’s going to take a highly organised, highly efficient management team to run this show.”

He said he would also commit £50 million over five years for a Twenty20 competition at Lord’s every September involving England, a West Indies Stanford XI and two Test-playing nations chosen by the ECB. — AP
