NEW DELHI: Hockey which was downgraded to the ‘general’ category has been brought back into the ‘priority’ list by the Union Sports Ministry. An official announcement on Wednesday said that men’s hockey, along with football, swimming, basketball, cycling and volleyball had been upgraded to the ‘priority’ category. School games and university games were also accorded ‘priority’ status. Hockey was removed from the ‘priority’ list in May last year. Football, volleyball, cycling and swimming were also downgraded at that time. Additional benefits Those sports that have been promoted from the ‘others’ category will be getting the additional benefit of engaging foreign coaches apart from gaining more international exposure for their teams. In the meantime, the ministry has named Ajit Pal Singh and Zafar Iqbal as government observers in men and women’s hockey respectively, replacing Group Capt. R.S. Bhola (retd) and Rupa Saini. They will be observers in the selection committee meetings and also oversee the promotion and development of the game.
