India out of reckoning

Kazan: A second defeat on Tuesday against Belgium virtually pushed India out of reckoning in the second of the third hockey Olympic qualifiers for women now in progress here.

Belgium defeated India 3-2 after leading 2-1 at half-time.

The United States, the favourite, continues to top the pool after it thrashed France 7-0. In the other match, the Netherlands Antilles defeated Russia 3-1.

U.S. leads the table with nine points from three matches, followed by the Netherlands Antilles also on nine. Belgium is in the third place with six points, ahead of India (three) and Russia (zero).

India takes on the United States on Thursday after a day’s break on Wednesday.
