Vijay Kumar finishes eighth

NEW DELHI: Vijay Kumar shot a 580 out of 600 to finish eighth in the 25-metre rapid fire pistol event in the shooting World Cup in Beijing on Saturday.

He improved his score from 286 in the first stage to 294 in the second, but still missed the final by one point.

In fact, Alexei Klimov of Russia won the silver despite a 581 in the qualification series. He actually needed a shoot-off to make the final.

The other Indian in the fray, Pemba Tamang, shot a 576 in taking the 13th spot from among 47 shooters.

The results: Men’s 25m rapid fire pistol: 1. Sergei Alifirenko (Rus) 686.7 (586); 2. Alexei Klimov (Rus) 780.9 (581); 3. Zhang Penghui (Chn) 778.3 (582); 8. Vijay Kumar 580; 13. Pemba Tamang 576.
