States failed to set up family courts: Manmohan
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has regretted that many State governments failed to discharge their obligation to set up at least one family court in one district.
“It was aimed at adoption of a conciliatory approach in such cases, giving preference to mutual settlement over adjudication by court. Many litigants, mostly hailing from the socially and economically weaker sections, have to travel long distance to seek redress of their grievances. It is, therefore, necessary to set up at least one family court in each of the 465 districts.”
Dr. Singh was inaugurating a conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts here. The Prime Minister assured Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan that he would examine the suggestion that the Centre step in to set up adequate number of family courts.
Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj explained the steps taken by the Centre to cut down delays in disposal of cases.
