Commandos deployed on trains

Special correspondent

CHENNAI: With the increase in passenger traffic at railway stations and in trains due to summer vacation, the Government Railway Police have stepped up their surveillance and for the first time deployed personnel from the Tamil Nadu Commando Police.

At a recent review meeting, Additional Director-General of Police K.Vijaykumar suggested to the railway police to take the assistance of Commando Police who are well trained to tackle emergencies. Following this, Inspector-General of Police (Railway) Uma Ganapathi Sastri and his team worked out the modalities of operation.

The move would instil confidence in rail users, DIG of Police (Railways) P. Sivanandi said.

On Saturday, the police led by Superintendent of Police (Railway) M.C.Sarangan sensitised the public to the need to be alert.

The public can use the helpline number 9962 500 500, which is functioning round the clock, for any emergency.
