MUMBAI: Sunil Ekka’s match-winner two minutes before the final whistle helped Army XI lift the 46th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament. Down a goal in the first half, Army XI surged back to win the final 2-1 at the Mahindra stadium on Saturday. Renel Singh chipped in with a controlled penalty corner hit for the equaliser (43rd minute) after Amar Aiyamma’s stunning deflection had put BP up (17th).
The champions, coached by Gopal Chand, earned Rs. 1.25 lakh, the runners-up, coached by Romeo James, got Rs. 75,000. Air-India (Mumbai) got Rs. 25,000 for finishing third, beating Karnataka XI 7-4 via the tie-break (full-time 3-3) in the tie between the losing semifinalists. The results: Final: Army XI 2 (Renel Singh, Sunil Ekka) bt Bharat Petroleum 1 (Amar Aiyamma). Third-place: Air India (Mumbai) 7 (Vikas Pillay, Alden D’Souza, Len Aiyappa 2, Preetinder Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Ajmer Singh) bt Karnataka XI 4 (Cyprian Aind 3, Ronald Kiran). — Special Correspondent
