KOCHI: Akshaya, the e-literacy initiative of the State which has also become a centre for providing e-services, is going to be re-oriented with two agencies coordinating in the network to provide e-commerce services. Speaking to The Hindu on the government’s new drive on the sidelines of the ongoing ‘Connecting Rural Communities Asia Forum 2008,’ organised by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., State IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said there wouldbe one agency for seven districts and they will be providing a number of services starting from arranging loans to insurance policies and other IT-enabled service. The Cabinet had approved of the proposal and tenders would be floated soon to select the agencies, he said. The agency could be an individual or a consortium and a person needs to be a qualified IT professional. This was to ensure that the agency was competitive in providing the service. The Akshaya entrepreneurs would be benefited because it would be through their network that the agency would get business. The IT Department had drawn up a list of 45 services that is expected of the agency. “However, the list is not exhaustive, it depends on the agency’s capabilities to develop new services,” he said. From the people’s perspective, they could enjoy some quality service with the initiative, he said. All the manually done paper work at banks or insurance offices would be taken care of by the Akshaya centre.
