NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, attached to the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, will roll out the entire 27 per cent reservation for the Other backward Classes in the coming academic session. For a majority of other educational institutions under the Union Health Ministry, the implementation will be between 40 and 70 per cent. This information was shared at a meeting representatives of these institutions had with the Ministry here. Informed sources in the Ministry told The Hindu that the AIIMS decided to increase by 27 its 50 MBBS seats, while 41 would be added to the existing 138 seats in postgraduate courses. According to preliminary estimates, the premier institute will add more seats than are required for the 27 per cent OBC quota rollout. Chairing the meeting, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss directed AIIMS authorities to start a 200-seat nursing college. The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh and the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research in Puducherry will increase their intake by more than 19 seats (approximately 70 per cent of the required 27 per cent) to accommodate OBC students. The All-India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health in Kolkata will implement 27 per cent reservation for OBC students. The Lady Hardinge Medical College, the Ram Manohar Lohia Medical College and the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in New Delhi; the All- India Institute of Speech and Hearing (Mysore), the All-India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Mumbai), the Central Institute of Psychiatric Research (Ranchi), the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Bangalore), the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (Imphal) and the Regional Institute of Para-Medical Nursing Sciences (Aizawl) will also implement the OBC reservation quota by at least 50 per cent in the 2008-09 academic session.
