Indian troops save lives after Congo plane crash

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Indian Army troops on a United Nations peacekeeping mission pitched in to rescue passengers of a crashed passenger aircraft in Congo.

“Timely rescue operation by our men saved many lives after the Heba Wora airways aircraft crashed at the Goma airport in the North Kivu province,” army officials said here.

According to initial reports, the aircraft carrying 80 passengers and six crew members failed to take off and skidded along the ground towards civilian houses at the end of the runway. After halting on a road in a heavily congested market, the aircraft burst into flames and the fire spread to nearby houses and shops.

The Indian soldiers rushed to the spot. But for their joining the relief work, many more civilian lives would have been lost, said the army officials.
