MUMBAI: Army XI (Bangalore) pipped Air-India (North) on goal difference after forcing a thrilling 2-2 draw in the 36th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament quarterfinal league at the Mahindra stadium. The armymen equalised three minutes before close. Mansid Bhengra won the ball in a scramble near the rival goal and squeezed the ball in through a host of legs, enabling his team top Pool ‘B’ and confirm a semifinal place. A-I (North) went ahead through a Sameer Dad field goal. Army XI captain Dhananjay Mahadik equalised via a direct penalty corner hit in the 23rd minute. Sandeep Singh responded with a soaring drag flick (43rd) to gain the lead for the airmen, who ended up sharing points in a must-win game. The results (quarterfinal league): Pool ‘B’: Namdhari XI 3 (Gurvinder Singh, Sher Singh, Malak Singh) drew with Mumbai Customs 3 (Hemant Gethe, Stanley Fernandes 2); Army XI 2 (Dhananjay Mahadik, Mansid Bhengra) drew with Air-India (North) 2 (Sameer Dad, Sandeep Singh).
