NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari on Tuesday disqualified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jai Narain Prasad Nishad, and accepted the resignation of N. Jothi from membership of the House. In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Somanth Chatterjee announced acceptance of NCP leader Purno N. Sangma’s resignation, with effect from March 20, from Meghalaya’s Tura constituency. Capt. Nishad, a former Union Minister, was disqualified on the basis of a petition filed by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj against him on charges that he campaigned against the party. Mr. Jothi tendered his resignation after he quit the AIADMK and joined the DMK. Mr. Sangma resigned his Lok Sabha membership on March 10 to lead his party in Meghalaya, where Assembly polls were held last month. Capt. Nishad’s issue was referred to the Privileges Committee and it submitted a report in November last. Subsequently, he was given a chance to appear before the Chairman and be heard personally, which he failed to do. In the Rajya Sabha, 50 members, including Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and Corporate Affairs Minister Premchand Gupta, were sworn in by the Chairman. They were among the 55 elected in the biennial elections. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan and Minister for Statistics and Project Implementation G.K. Vasan also took the oath of allegiance to the Constitution.
