KOCHI: Organic Kerala 2008 got underway in the City on Tuesday with a large number of organic agriculture produces and eco-friendly products ranging from toys to cloths made from organically grown cotton on show. The exhibition is on at Ernakulam Town Hall, open to the public from 10 a.m. till Friday. The show has been titled organic commodity fair and aims primarily to awaken public consciousness to the effects of mindless use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture. The market orientation of agriculture has led to a situation where production is carried out for sale. Organic Kerala, the third annual show in succession on organic agriculture and eco-friendly products, has been put together by Organic Kerala Charitable Trust in collaboration with various bodies that have consistently worked with local people to re-discover the roots of agriculture. One of the more major attractions at the exhibition is the variety of mangoes. Why mangoes continue to fascinate us despite being ubiquitous in our country? Organic Kerala has perhaps a clue to this fascination. A seminar on bio-diversity and food safety on is key feature of the exhibition on the inaugural day.
