Savouring victory: Winners of the chess competitions conducted in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: Summer time chess activities in the district got off to a start with the State-level chess tournament, organised by Myl Chess Academy (MCA), at Puthur Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School. The two-day tournament, which concluded here on Sunday, saw the participation of more than 225 players from various districts. It was conducted in under-15, 13, 11, 9, 7, women and open categories. “With Tiruchi players making good progress, we thought it would be right to conduct more State-level tournaments and the just concluded one is the first of the three such events Tiruchi would host this summer,” says Tiruchi District Chess Association (TDCA) secretary C. Lesunathan. As usual coaching camps have also been planned for this summer, with the first organised by the 4 Knights Chess Academy beginning from April 21. TDCA will conduct a camp for those who have competed in the State championships from May 15. “We want our players to achieve more and these camps are a step in that direction,” Mr. Lesunathan adds. The winnersBoys: B.P. Dinesh (Pudukottai) won the under-15 title, while S. Aravindh Kumar (Tiruchi) bagged the under-13 crown. R. Anirudh (Tiruchi), R.V. Brashanth (Tiruchi) and A.K. Gokulraman clinched the under-11, 9, 7 titles respectively. Girls: A. Karunambigai (Dindigul) won the under-15 title, while R. Monega (Tiruchi) secured the under-13 crown. A. Nithila (Tiruchi), S.S. Hashini (Tiruchi) and Atzoyya Harini bagged the under-11, 9, 7 titles respectively. J. Vaishnavi (Tiruchi) emerged winner in the women’s section, while Lakshminarayanan (Dindigul) won the title in the open category. At the valediction, Physical Education Director, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, N.S. Sivakumar gave away the prizes in the presence of MCA president, N. Velum Mylum and Tamil Nadu State Chess Association joint-secretary R.K. Balagunasekaran.
