Shyam Nikil claims title

Virudhunagar: World Youth Olympiad gold medallist Shyam Nikil of Nagercoil, collected 7.5 points out of possible 8 to win the Virudhunagar district open chess championship title at Virudhunagar on Sunday.

Final placings: Open: 1. Shyam Nikil 7.5 points; 2. B.T. Muralikrishnan 7; 3. P. Maheswaran 6; 4. R. Preethi 6; 5. G.R.S. Vijayasarathi 6; 6. International Master P. Mithrakanth 6; 7. K. Narayanan 6; 8. J. Kedarnath 5.5; 9. Amuthan 5.5; 10. S. Ganesh Babu 5.5.

Jaishankar stars

Jaishankar powered his way to a brilliant unbeaten 113 to help Olympus CC score a 174-run win over Canara Bank in the Canara Bank-MDCA third division league at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores: Second division: Babu Academy 93 in 26 overs lost to Majestic Kits CC 94 for four in 13.4 overs (Ibrahim 50).

Third division: Olympus 243 for six in 30 overs (Jaishankar 113 not out) bt Canara Bank CC 69 in 21.2 overs (Murugan four for 10).

Win for Sri Vasantha

E. Jeyaprakash (79) helped Sri Vasantha Sweets defeat Sam Babu XI by 10 runs in the DDCA first division league at GTN Arts College ground, Dindigul, on Sunday.

The scores: Sri Vasantha Sweets CC 205 for nine in 45 overs (E. Jeyaprakash 79) bt Sam Babu XI 195 in 44.5 overs (R. Shravanan Kumar 70).

Big win for Young

Young CC posted an emphatic 10-wicket victory over Sunny CC in the Kanyakumari DCA first division cricket league at Nagercoil on Sunday.

The scores: Sunny CC 73 in 25 overs (Rameshkumar four for 13) lost to Young CC 74 for no loss in 10 overs (Arun 48 not out).

IOB beats Lightning

Indian Overseas Bank Cricket Club beat Lightning Cricket Club by 16 runs in the Tirunelveli DCA first cricket division league at Sankarnagar on Sunday.

The scores: IOB 134 for nine in 35 overs (Senthilkumar 41) bt Lightning CC 118 in 27.5 overs.

Temple City posts win

Temple City Football Club beat Bosco XI 2-0 in the Madurai District Football Association ‘B’ division league for Hi-Tech Arai Trophy at Madurai on Sunday.

The results: Temple City FC 2 (Vinodh, Ramesh) bt Bosco XI 0; Thiagarajar College of Engg. 0 drew with High Court FC 0; Railway Institute 1 (Kamalesh) bt Victoria FC, Usilampatti 0.

2-0 win for Amaravathi

Amaravathi Pudur Football Club registered a 2-0 win over Karuppiah Ambalam Memorial Football Club (Kottaiyur) in the Sivagangai District Football Association ‘A’ division league at Karaikudi on Sunday.

The results:

A division: Amaravathi Pudur FC 2 (Veerapandian, Selvam) bt KAMFC

‘B’ division: Friends 1 (Selvaraj) drew with Chidambaram Memorial 1 (Saravanan Prabakaran).

Railway pair wins

The Railway duo of A.N. Banerjee and Gopinath Manna won the Subhash Agarwala memorial Trophy, for the National selected pairs’ event, in the 39th summer National bridge championships which concluded in Aruvankadu on Sunday.

The Railway pair, the overnight leader, romped home by a huge margin of 122 VPs, the final score reading a stunning 554 VPs.

Pranab Bardhan and S.N. De Sarkar finished second with 432 VPs. K. Vijaykumar and K. Divakar Reddy ran out of steam after leading for seven rounds and had to be content with the third spot with 419 VPs.

Two other Maharashtra pairs — Suhas Vaidya and Kaustubh Bendre (405) and Dipak Poddar and Milind Athavale (402) — came from behind to overtake Bengal’s Alok Sadhu and Badal Das who finished with 401.
