Kanaka (Kolar) in quarterfinals

BANGALORE: Kanaka (Kolar) had a poor third quarter and almost paid the prize for it.

But a resurgent final 10 minutes of play in which Girish (22) and Raju (18) helped the Kolar side record a 61-56 over Pinakini (Gauribidannur).

With this win it advance to the quarterfinals of the State sub-junior (under-13) basketball championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here on Sunday.

A 31-19 half time score seemed handy for Kanaka, but Subramanya and Charan had other ideas for the Pinakini side.

The two dug themselves to outrun the rivals for a 21-9 third quarter scoreline.

However, the tempo frittered out in the last and with Alok chipping in along with Girish and Raju, the Kolar side managed to keep the lead till the end.

In another close encounter, Nationals (Mysore) down 16-18 at half-time, turned things over in the third and fourth quarter against Young Orions for a 37-34 verdict.

KS Hegde of Mangalore had mixed fortunes.

The boys team progressed with a 35-28 margin over Dharwad’s Rovers, while its girls came a cropper against Mounts Club and lost 8-32.

The results: Pre-quarterfinals: Boys: Merchants (Davangere) 47 (Darshan 15) bt Southern Blues 22 (Akshay 14); Kanaka (Kolar) 61 (Girish 22, Raju 18, Alok 14) bt Pinakini (Gauribidannur) 56 (Subramanya 17, Charan 12); KS Hedge (Mangalore) 35 (Prem 12, Mohin 11) bt Rovers (Dharwad) 28; Nationals (Mysore) 37 (Karan Kumar 21, Sharath 14) bt Young Orions 34 (Vishwanath 12).
