Increase PDS rice supply: CPI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India has urged the State government to increase the supply of PDS rice from 20 to 30 kg as the present quota is hardly sufficient to meet the requirements of a family of three.

The party’s State committee, at a meeting here on Sunday, also urged the government to introduce a new land reform act to take over excess land from landowners and distribute them to tillers. The landowners should be sufficiently compensated when their lands are acquired.

Amendment opposed

The meeting opposed any move by the State to amend the Manual Workers Act, that would facilitate transfer of various welfare boards from the Labour Department to the Revenue Department. By another resolution, the party appealed to Central and State governments to work together for implementing the Hogenakkal drinking water supply scheme.

The meeting elected a 32-member State administrative committee and a 9-member executive committee, apart from two State deputy secretaries.
