NEW DELHI: Continuing his unbeaten run, Abhijeet Gupta upstaged third seeded Georgian Grandmaster Levan Pantsulaia in 34 moves to share the second spot with five points after six rounds of the Dubai Open chess tournament on Friday. The 20th seed from Bhilwara punished Pantsulaia for trading a knight for two kingside pawns on the 17th move. Later, Abhijeet exchanged a knight for a rook and forced Pantsulaia to give up. Commonwealth champion R. B. Ramesh drew with top seeded Azerbaijani Gadir Guseinov to reach four points. Georgia’s Merab Gagunshvili ended Filipino Wesley So’s winning run to take the lead with 5.5 points. In the Gausdal Classics, Sandipan Chanda scored his third straight victory after facing USA’s Eric Moskow and emerged as the sole lead with 3.5 points from four rounds, at Gausdal in Norway. G. N. Gopal drew his fourth successive game following an equal battle with Norway’s Hole Oystein. Humpy finishes fourthIn the Ruy Lopez Masters in Merida, Spain, Koneru Humpy finished fourth with 4.5 points from seven rounds. In the final round of this eight-player competition, she defeated Italy’s Fabiano Caruana in 40 moves. England’s Michael Adams won the title with 5.5 points.
