Court wants help booths at railway, bus stations
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed that the Inspector-General of Police, with the cooperation of the Southern Railway General Manager, set up help booths at all major railway stations and also at bus terminals.
This is because railway stations and bus terminals were places where women and girls who abandon their families are often picked up.
In its interim order on a writ petition, the First Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Prabha Sridevan said the Railways should include in its digital information scroll bar on display at all stations the information relating to the availability of help booths at the stations.
In August last year, the court, after recording the compliance report filed by the State Government on the court’s directions, issued further directions. The government had submitted the compliance report.
The Director, Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, had filed a report on the action taken up-to-date with suggestions or remarks for further directions.
He had also framed a “Scheme of Rehabilitation for the Victims of Immoral Trafficking.” (Only a few days ago, the High Court had given a host of directives to the government for improving the conditions of the inmates of Juvenile Homes and also the working of Juvenile Justice Boards.)
