CPI: don’t go for biofuel
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The CPI on Wednesday warned the United Progressive Alliance government of “disastrous” results if it diverted oilseeds for producing biofuel.
In a statement here, the Central Secretariat of the CPI urged the government to have policy perceptions to increase the production of foodgrains and pulses.
Taking note of media reports, the CPI said that about 12 million hectares of land, equal to the area of Kerala and Goa put together, would be brought under cultivation of biofuel. It said the reports spoke about the government formulating a biofuel policy, aimed at setting up a National Biofuel Board and setting a target of meeting about 10 per cent of transport fuel with biofuel by 2017.
