NEW DELHI: Repeated reminders and running behind consumers to pay for the water they consume has yielded dividends for the Delhi Jal Board. The water utility has succeeded in collecting a huge pile of money as recovery dues for the financial year 2007-08. The Board has collected a total of Rs.460 crore in dues from consumers in the domestic as well as commercial categories and bagged Rs.9 crore from the Delhi Development Authority alone. According to the Board officials, the amount collected during the financial year that ended on March 31was more than it had collected all along till date. “We managed to recover less than Rs.430 crore in the financial year 2006-07. This year’s collection by far has been the best,” said Jal Board Director (Revenue) S. B. Shashank. He said the efforts made to recover the dues had paid off handsomely. “We were very methodical in sending out reminders and notices to those who owed us money. Besides, there was a heavy rebate offered on surcharge calculated on pending amounts.” While consumers in the domestic category were offered rebate up to 90 per cent on the surcharge, the Government departments had to pay just the principal amount. The Board had recently sought the Finance Department’s help in recovering dues from various government departments like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the DDA.
