Thrissur: Political leaders should not make irresponsible remarks about musicians, Hindustani vocalist Ajoy Chakravarthy has said. He was addressing a press conference held here on Monday on the sidelines of a dance and music festival to herald Thrissur Pooram. Asked to comment on the reported statement by Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan against singer Usha Uthup, Mr. Chakravarthy said that one had the right to speak about another, but careless statements are better avoided. “If you ask me to speak about cricket, I will not utter one word because it is all Greek to me. I have immensely enjoyed Ms. Uthup’s music. Her music is entertaining. As a performer of popular music, she may sometimes need to be agile to entertain the audience,” Mr. Chakravarthy said. He said that instant fame that young performers got from reality shows would not create masters of music. Hard work“Only years of hard work creates good performers. What do shows that create Chote Ustads overnight contribute to Indian music? Moreover, these singers perform songs immortalised by singers such as Lata Mangeshkar. It is easy to imitate, but not so to create an original piece of music,” he added.
