Internet cable damage: two ships impounded

Mumbai: The Dubai Port Trust authorities have impounded two ships that are believed to have been responsible for the undersea cable damage, which crippled Internet services in India earlier this year.

MV Hounslow and MT Ann were impounded when they reached the Dubai shores, a Reliance Globalcom official said.

The action was taken after Reliance Globalcom provided details of the ships after studying the satellite images of the ship movements around the area of undersea cable damage.

“The matter has been brought to the notice of appropriate authorities which are taking necessary action,” the official said.

In February, Internet services across India were disrupted for two weeks because of cuts in undersea cable network of Flag Telecom, a subsidiary of Reliance Globalcom, off the northern coast of Egypt and the UAE.

The cable was damaged because of jerks and force of the ship, the official said.

The cables connecting India and Europe had suffered damage because of the ships’ anchors, the spokesperson said.

The port authorities would call the owners and captains of the two ships for an explanation. — PTI
