State to crackdown on hoarders

Government will check rising prices of essential commodities: YSR

Food grains worth Rs. 70 crore recovered

Pulses, edible oil at subsidised rates soon

HYDERABAD: The Government has decided to launch a war against the spiralling rise of essential commodities from Ugadi day by targeting the hoarders.

In an open letter to the people of the State on the eve of Ugadi, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday said that officials have already been directed to launch an all out drive against hoarders.

He said that Government will not spare them and initiate stern action.

So far food grains worth Rs. 70 crore that had been illegally stocked in godowns were recovered, the Chief Minister said seeking the cooperation of the people.

He said the Government had earmarked Rs. 300 crore in the latest budget for market intervention whenever the prices of food grains go up. Reiterating the Government’s commitment to launch the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme for the poor, Dr. Reddy said these would benefit 6.5 crore people in the State.

He said the Government will not just stop with distributing rice alone but also provide pulses and edible oil at subsidised rates.

A high level delegation was being sent to New Delhi to discuss with the Union Government officials the need to ensure uninterrupted supply of rice, subsidised pulses and edible oil. A monitoring committee comprising civil supplies, transport and commercial taxes department officials would be constituted to prevent alleged irregularities.

Stating that the Government would continue to launch new programmes for the benefit of the people, Dr. Reddy said already the free power had bailed out the farmers facing agrarian crisis. Construction of irrigation projects only brought further cheers to the farmers.
