Young doctors exhorted to change public mind-set on health issues

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: University College of Medical Sciences, the only medical college affiliated to Delhi University, held its Convocation and Annual Day celebrations here on Saturday.

Eighty-eight students were awarded their MBBS degrees, while 40 were conferred MD/MS degrees by Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental.

Congratulating the degree holders and prize winners in various categories, Prof. Pental told them that they were achievers who had the ability to change the public mind-set on issues like healthy living, hygiene and other new emerging diseases.

Addressing the students, the Additional Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, S.K. Bhattacharya, said: “This is a moment of pride as this journey would help you in serving the society and the community.”

He advised medical students to pursue research activities since there was no dearth of funds for them in today’s scenario.

In his annual report, UCMS Principal O.P. Kalra highlighted the activities of the institution in the previous year, during which a computer was provided to each faculty member; the library was equipped with many e-journals; modern teaching aids were introduced; and laboratories were upgraded by procuring various sophisticated equipments.

Pro-Vice Chancellor S. K. Tandon, who is also the chairman of the Governing Body of UCMS, emphasised the need to increase the non-salary budget that could generate good medical education and research activities.

Dean of Colleges Nayanjot Lahiri and Medical Superintendent of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital P.C. Dikshit were among those present at the function.
